Indie minyaners: Where do we go next?

One of the issues I hope to address in this blog is the looming question of the next stage for the members of Independent Minyanim. With all of the fanfare and newspaper coverage, and even a conference and a sociological study, we hear a lot about the successes of these minyanim. We are also aware that most of them are driven by a narrow demographic – singles and young families, mostly 20s and 30s. The young demographic is related to (part cause, part effect) three other aspects of these minyanim: most are "lay-led" (I'll have more to say about the deceptive nature of that term later); in high-rent urban areas; and not encumbered by celebrations for people who aren't already firmly part of the community. But it's not only the critics who know that this is transient – many of us are now starting families and looking for the place we're going to settle down. In New York, that means we're looking at Riverdale, Teaneck, Washington Heights, etc., trying to figure out where we can find the right balance of comfort and community. And it raises the question of where we can go.

The problem is particularly acute for those of us looking for egalitarian communities. Conservative shuls and rabbis often suggest that we should obviously be joining them. But it is not so simple. Most Conservative shuls are not located in the neighborhoods where shomer shabbat people tend to live, nor do they have more than a handful of families who walk to shul. The norm for Conservative shuls is a very frontal prayer experience, with the rabbi literally 'directing' the service and a Hazzan leading most or all Shabbat services, a model that is a major turn-off for Indies looking for a more communal, participatory setting. And since most of the membership of many of them are not observant or Jewishly educated, the vast majority of shuls' and rabbis' energy and resources are aimed at them and are of limited interest to most of us.

We could all just start Indie minyanim in the suburbs or wherever we move to. That is already happening in some places – Koleinu at Beth Shalom in Teaneck, Pico Egal in LA, Segula at the northern edge of DC, to name just a few. But they're not the solution. Families do want shuls, more formal communities. They need rabbis and good children's services and learning etc. There are enough families today that would strongly prefer an egal community to build on. What it will take is a few shuls who are in the right locations to decide to rethink what they're doing and offer a real opening. And it will take some of these families taking the offer seriously enough to decide to make the long-term investment to build it up into what we all think it can become. The question is, how do we make that happen. How do we convince people who have done things one way for a long time to be open to significant cultural change? And how do we organize a core of families prepared to reward them for that openness?

  1. I'm a member of Beth Sholom in Teaneck. Please explain in what way Koleinu is an indie minyan.

  2. It is not an indie minyan but was started by people who had been involved at Hadar in Manhattan and was initially explicitly billed as bringing Hadar's culture there. It was only after Koleinu started that people got the idea of how different it was from the main service.

  3. I'm a member of Beth Sholom in Teaneck and go to Koleinu regularly. You seem to think that we are separate from the shul but in fact, we are very integrated. Our kids go to the good Children's minyan & part ipate in Tzipporei Shalom, our Children's choir. We have an adult acapello group, a shiur eay Shabbat am & before Maariv on Shabbat. Best of all, many families observe Shabbat
and my kids (ages 10 & 8) love shul. So it can be a solution for you and your friends' looking for a place to land. Come visit. I was in your place 7 years ago & we left Manhattan and are very happy. Rabbi Lori Forman-Jacobi.

  4. I think you wrote your own answer, but didn't realize it. Synagogues are already welcoming people in. However you define them, Pico Egal and Koleinu are already based in synagogues. While Segula is indy and attracts people who aren't part of a synagogue community, from my experience, I'd say slightly less than half the attendees are also members of a local synagogue and others participate in synagogue communities even if they aren't members. If anything, it's a great group with enthusiastic davening that provides a place for members of different synagogues to pray together (It meets in an area that's walking distance to 2 orthodox, 2 conservative, 1 reform congregation, & Fabrangen)

As for your hope on synagogues rethinking what they are doing, you need to be more specific on what needs rethinking. The way I see it, the key thing is ownership. If people enter a new community and feel that their voices can change things, it is welcoming. If they're constantly hit by, "that's not the way we've done it" it's not welcoming. The second is true for some places, but not all and you can only find out by trying.

  6. Hi Josh--glad to be reading your blog!

I think that it is possible for indie minyanim to continue their success by providing some of the "benefits of membership" that typical congregations provide for their congregants.

The one that seems most obvious, cost-effective and meaningfully aligned to the vision of most independent minyanim, is liturgically traditional, creative children's or family tefillah. Yet many independent minyanim fall short here, either because it is not yet a part of their vision, or their population hasn't yet expressed an interest, or no space, no money, etc.

I wonder how we can support the birth of creative learning opportunities for children and their families in the context of independent minyanim. I'd love to be a part of that conversation, both personally and professionally.

  7. Looking forward to this blog as it moves forward.

You bring up some complex issues here, obviously. But it's not as though indie minyans (even those not located within shuls) are mutually exclusive of synagogues. At Chavurat Lamdeinu in Madison, NJ, where I pray weekly most are also members of a local Reform shul, though they've taken their Shabat mornings elsewhere.

Similarly, it's not as though families with kids and indie minyans are mutually exclusive either. One families prayer community may be a minyan while their kids receive private tutoring or attend a day school. Still others will be members of a synagogue to take advantage of its educational program, but they will pray in a more indie environment.

I think that moving forward, we will see indie minyan families taking a variety of diverse approaches to this.

  8. I'm getting tired of hearing myself say this over and over again, and yet here I go. Shtibl Minyan in L.A. is ten years old this year. It is not based in a synagogue. Our adult demographic ranges from 20s to 60s. We have many families with kids (from infant to teen) and we have our own children's program (ShtiK=Shtibl Kids). We have celebrated britot, baby namings, bnei mitzvah, weddings, and we have grieved together at funerals and shivas. We are not a transient minyan. We are a consensus based, egalitarian community in an urban area (in the L.A. meaning of that term).

    ReplyDelete
  9. I hope that if the newest independent minyanim develop options for children, they will apply the same careful thought to these options that they have already applied to services and programming for adults, rather than just recreating the children's programming found in synagogues.

  10. Aryeh brings up an important point. There are independent multigenerational lay led communities already out there. I think it's important for us to discuss what the 20 and 30 something are doing, sure. But let's remember in the number of options available are lay led communities that are egalitarian and open to new voices, some of them already existing for longer than some of "us" have been alive.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Aryah, what makes the Shtibl Minyan a "community" and not a "synagogue"? There are synagogues that do less than that and there are synagogues that rent space (I was part of one to it finally was able to buy a building). Is it purely whether or not there is an employed rabbi? Even if it doesn't employ a rabbi, to call Shtibl lay led is a bit of a stretch considering the number of rabbis & rabbinical students who attend. BTW, I've attended Shtibl Minyan once.

This is a semantics issue, but so much here is semantics. There is no hard line between synagogues and minyanim and there is a lot of variation in both categories. Accepting this and supporting more development in areas bounding categories is perhaps one way to bridge this assumed divide.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Dan writes:

The word "rabbi" has two different meanings in that sentence:
rabbi1 = a job description for someone who is the religious leader of a community
rabbi2 = a title for someone who has completed rabbinical school and/or received semichah

If a community doesn't have a rabbi1, then it's "lay-led", regardless of how many of its participants happen to be rabbi2s, and even if the sha"tz is a rabbi2.

    ReplyDelete
  13. So, first of all, there are maybe three or four rabbis that attend Shtibl on an even irregular basis. There are several rabbinical students who come on an irregular basis, but they are not central to Shtibl. Most of the Rabbinical students go to PicoEgal or IKAR. The point is not that you know synagogues that are lame. The point is that Shtibl is a consensus based community in which all decisions (including halakhic decisions) are made by consensus. The fact that you could say: "Even if it doesn't employ a rabbi, to call Shtibl lay led is a bit of a stretch considering the number of rabbis & rabbinical students who attend" is only a sign of an unfortunate ignorance. If Shtibl is not an independent minyan I don't know what is. (By the way, I never used the words lay-led, though most of the davening and leyning is done by people who are not now nor have they ever been clerical.)

    ReplyDelete
  14. The reason that this bothers me so much is that Shtibl actually is a different model of what a shul could be. Shtibl has membership, but membership is not dependent on dues, but rather on service in and to the community. (http://www.shtibl.com/belonging/membership.html) It is not a fee for service synagogue, it is a community which is self-supporting and is unaffiliated with any denominational structure. We are not transient. The opposite is true-people have moved into the neighborhood because of Shtibl. We are not dependent on a Rab school population. One of our coordinators is an engineering professor and the other is an oncologist.

Koleinu is a minyan that is part of a synagogue; Pico Egal rents space in a synagogue. There is a big difference; no one would say that Hadar is "based in" a Presbyterian church.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Aryeh, I definitely respect what Shtibl is. (My one time there was to attend an aufruf of a rabbincal student who was a regular attendee so, perhaps, the # of rabbis/students in attendance were a bit higher that day)

My question is still why Shtibl isn't a synagogue and what's the dividing line between a synagogue and a community or minyan. When we're talking about what synagogues can do differently, I think that's a vital question to answer.

Unlike BZ's point, It's not no mara d'atra since that isn't a core part of many Reform, Reconstructionist and indy synagogues. Even decision by consensus fits in some Reconstructionist & other synagogues.

I took the term lay leadership from the original post and wrongly applied it to your comment. I also am not fond of the term. They are voluntary leaders and their dues is spent by giving time, not money. Still, I was member of a synagogue that had set dues, but a huge portion couldn't afford them and they over contributed their time. Is this a fundamentally different model. (Not to mention other indy minyans do charge dues so it's not a dividing feature)

One thing I notice Stibl doesn't mention on its website is youth education. Are families relying on synagogues & day schools? Is the exporting of youth ed rather than hiring teachers internally a feature of indy minyans vs synagogues?

    ReplyDelete
  17. BZ, Pico Egal is a minyan based in a synagogue that has a long history of supporting and building Jewish prayer communities that are different from it's own synagogue services. The synagogue decided to create and value space that it could use for such purposes. That is not something to be ignored.

I didn't say mara d'atra, I said religious leader. This is the function of most congregational rabbis whether or not they are also viewed as the halachic decisor for their community.

I took the term lay leadership from the original post and wrongly applied it to your comment.

The Shtibl website calls it "an entirely lay-led religious community", so you're not pulling this out of nowhere.

The minyan also goes out of its way to define itself as distinct from the synagogue, so that choice should be respected too.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Shtibl can be what indy minyanim might aspire to as they grow up. We do have our own children's shabbat program. We don't export youth education. Some of us send our kids to day schools, some to religious schools, some just rely on the shabbat morning and the house, and some homeschool. (The model wherein the synagogue also runs the day school is a broken model. The concerns and needs of the synagogue and the concerns of the day school are not always the same and yet the one board--the synagogue board--makes the final decisions for both. (At least that's the way it is in LA.)) When people move out of the community, as they do for one reason or another, they often end up trying to reproduce a Shtibl whereever they end up. My point is that as participants in indy minyanim grow up, get jobs, get families, there is no reason to think that they will abandon their independent minyan and run to the local large Temple or Synagogue. As proof: Shtibl. Q.E.D.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Aryeh, I agree that indy minyanim can grow what. What I'm trying to get an answer to is why a mature indy minyan doesn't call itself a synagogue. What aspects of a synagogue does Shtibl reject? A communal responsibility to support youth education beyond shabbat seems to be one of them. Note I'm not saying opening a hebrew school, but most synagogues collect money from all members whether or not they have children to support education. Shtibl seems to have a go it your own approach that puts the full onus of payment on the family with the children. Is there something else that inherently distinguishes Shtibl from a synagogue or do you just bristle at the word "synagogue"?

BTW, assuming you're the correct Aryeh, my wife and I used your ketubah text and greatly appreciated the work and skill you put into it.

BZ, my point on Pico Egal goes back to the intial topic of this post on what synagogues can do to welcome the people from indy minyans. It doesn't make a difference whether or not Pico Egal considers itself separate. It matters that Beth Am makes space for it and welcomes it into the building. Despite being separate, I suspect there is more than a little cross-polination between Pico Egal & Beth Am that's at least in part because they are in the same building.

    ReplyDelete
  21. BZ, if having a religous leader is the key, does that mean every time a synagogue is between rabbis or decides it can't afford one it ceases to become a synagogue and become a minyan? There are way to many synagogue models for how paid rabbis interact with their membership to have this be the dividing point.
There seems to be a strong philosophical divide on whether you should pay people for their work. While volunteerism is vital and should be used more often, I strongly believe that 100% voluntary leadership would be very unhealthy for the Jewish community on a larger scale.

    Ok, fair enough.

I wasn't saying that that determines whether something is a synagogue or a minyan; I was saying that that determines whether something is lay-led. There are lay-led synagogues, and there are non-lay-led minyanim.

...and I certainly wasn't equating "lay-led" with "good".

  23. Interesting how this has conversation has evolved.

I think somewhere in this discussion of what's a synagogue and what isn't a simple fact got lost: synagogues, temples, congregations, whatever they're called, all require the payment of monetary dues for membership.

Shtibl, if I'm reading this correctly, does not require that. Right?

    ReplyDelete
  24. David, I think the money issue is fuzzy. Most (all?) indy minyans have very easy ways to give money as donations. Many, including Shtibl list a suggested donation on their website. The suggested amount scales with the minyan size and scope of what they want to do.
Interestingly Hadar with $165K annual expenses suggests $250 annually while Shtibl with $13K annual expenses suggests $300. This is obviously a function of the # of members.
    https://www.kehilathadar.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=1
    http://www.shtibl.com/belonging/membership.html

Synagogues do tend to have clear membership prices and push payment harder, but I've never been involved with a synagogue that turned people away from participation or even high holiday services due to lack of ability or desire to pay. Full synagogue dues tend to be much higher, but more and more synagogues have dues rates for younger people in the same range and Shtible and Hadar.

Most Synagogues do push monetary donations (whether dues or donations) over volunteerism compared to the opposite with the indy minyans I've seen. This might be a good marker for the difference, but there's definitely a lot of variation in both categories and I doubt one could draw a clean dividing line.

Unless it is changed in the last fifteen years or so since I used to regularly attend one, Chabad congregations do not require membership or dues and rely on donations. They are certainly not lay-led, and I don't see why they wouldn't qualify as synagogues.
